W’ui’kinuxv Day Tour

Be our guest for the day to experience wilderness, wildlife and culture in W’ui’kinuxv Territory. A scenic boat ride, W’ui’kinuxv stories and our knowledgeable Grizzly Bear tour guides will build memories to last a lifetime. You may be lucky enough to observe grizzlies feeding on the abundant food resources, fishing salmon from river channels and foraging rich vegetation in the Kilbella estuary. In a wilderness setting, the bears lumber through when they want to.

W’ui’kinuxv Weekend

As our guest for the weekend, in addition to Grizzly Bear viewing, Elders, Hereditary Chiefs, Master Carvers and other W’ui’kinuxv citizens will show you what it means to be W’ui’kinuxv. We will invite you into our ceremonial Big House, the House of Nuùw̓aqawa, where our guests will experience traditional stories, dances and songs and a W’ui’kinuxv meal. Additional experiences may include canoe trips in the estuary, a lake tour, food harvesting or carving opportunities.

How to Find Us

All tours will be guided within W’ui’kinuxv Territory in locations near W’ui’kinuxv Village (Katit 1 Reserve) along the Waanukv (river). W’ui’kinuxv Village, located in Rivers Inlet, is a 45-minute flight from Port Hardy. The Village is approximately 125 km southwest of Bella Coola, about 65 km north of the northern tip of Vancouver Island, and about 85 km southeast of Bella Bella. Kilbella Estuary Conservancy is located at the mouth of the Kilbella River in Rivers Inlet andabout 10 km northwest of W’ui’kinuxv Village.

Carved by glaciers from the last ice age and bordered by steep mountains, fjords are found only on the coasts of British Columbia and eastern Canada, Alaska, Chile, New Zealand, Greenway and Norway. On the Central Coast of BC, W’ui’kinuxv Lake is a unique glacial fjord lake. A chain of four distinct basins, W’ui’kinuxv Lake has a total surface area of 9,450 hectares, an elevation of 15 metres, a maximum depth of 370 metres and a length of 56 kilometres. W’ui’kinuxv Lake is the third-highest producer of adult Sockeye Salmon in North America and is the source of the 6-km-long Waanukv (River), which annually moves 10.2 billion cubic metres (2.2 trillion gallons) of water into Rivers Inlet.
