Alex Chartrand, Jr. was given the name Hàmac̓a, which refers to the cannibal dance. The Ugvalas family, to which he belongs, is one of the four central W’ui’kinuxv families. Alex’s mother, Verna Hunt, is a citizen of the Kwakiutl Nation in Fort Rupert. Alex’s father, Alexander Bruce Chartrand, is W’ui’kinuxv and the sole proprietor of H’aiagal’ath Grizzly Bear Tours.

Alex has dedicated his life to protecting W’ui’kinuxv Territory and has enjoyed numerous stewardship roles. His conservation experience began at Chislacy Ecological Society, working as a Fishery Field Technician and then transitioned to fieldwork with Hakai Beach Institute supporting the W’ui’kinuxv fishery. Alex later accepted a position at the W’ui’kinuxv Stewardship Network as a Coastal Guardian Watchmen, where he was responsible for touring and safeguarding researchers in the Territory. Alex spent most of his days on a boat traversing the water from one side of the Territory to the other, surveying clams, eelgrass and other sea life. He later went on to conduct ecological monitoring for Environmental Dynamics International. Currently, Alex serves as the Hydro Plant Operator for the Nicknaqueet Run-of-River Project in W’ui’kinuxv.

As a tour guide, Alex invites guests to journey with him to discover how the land has enriched his life and will now transform yours. He will guide guests into an experience of the serenity of W’ui’kinuxv’s vast lakes, mountains and wilderness while sharing the intimate knowledge of flora and fauna he has spent years cultivating.
